Your Annual Health Deep Dive

Building Your Own Personal Medical Early Warning System

April is my birth month, so it’s time for my annual physical exam. I call this my Annual Health Deep Dive. It’s one of the best things I do for myself all year long. And if you’re a busy guy who’s focused on becoming more fit and healthy, it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself as well. So, let’s dive in to see why!

Most guys I know hate going to the doctor and avoid it as much as possible. Many of my friends never want to go to the doctor, even when they’re sick. I know - that used to be me, too!

But, not anymore.

I now understand the importance of getting a thorough annual physical exam. And, in this edition of the LenDentonThrive Letter, I’m going to show you three reasons why your annual exam is your secret weapon for living a long, and healthy life.

1. Catch Health Issues Early

Many serious health problems begin silently. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, or prediabetes often lack early symptoms. Catching these early can prevent major complications like heart disease or stroke. These are leading causes of death. And, up to 50% of all cardiac-related deaths occur with NO PREVIOUS SYMPTOMS!  This is especially real to me because my younger brother suffered a fatal heart attack at age 39. He had no prior symptoms!

A thorough physical exam includes blood tests and screenings that spot problems before they escalate. Early detection means early treatment and better outcomes. This proactive step saves you future medical burdens. And, it may just save your life!

2. Get Tailored Health and Fitness Guidance

Forget about one-size-fits-all diets or intense gym routines that fail to deliver long-term results. Your annual physical exam offers personalized insights based on your unique health info. This not only includes your weight, blood pressure, and glucose levels, but also deeper information based on lab tests and scans that you should be getting every year. Here are the 5 health metrics that every guy (especially if you’re over 40) should know:

  1. Blood pressure

  2. Cholesterol levels

  3. Blood glucose levels

  4. Body weight and waist circumference

  5. Cancer screening metrics (Prostate and colon cancer metrics)

These are all available through a typical annual physical exam.

3. Establish a Long-Term Health Partnership

Think of your doctor as your health partner. Regular physicals build a relationship with a professional who understands your health history and goals. This partnership provides ongoing support for your overall health and fitness journey.

My primary care physician (PCP) is this sort of health partner to me. If your current health care provider isn’t the type of doctor who you can consider as a partner in your long-term health journey, I suggest that you find one who can be. It’s that important!

If you read the LDT Letter regularly, you know that I am a frequent critic of America’s “sick-care” approach to health management. I recently wrote about health and fitness being a Do-It-Yourself Project.

Annual exams are one way to make health care work for your long-term interests. These exams give you access to deep analytical info that you typically can’t get on your own. They are well worth the time and effort required. And if you have a family history of serious conditions like I do, these annual exams are an essential part of a medical early warning system that might save your life!

So, when you schedule your annual physical, you’ll be voting for a healthier version of you.  And, setting an example for those who look up to you!
