Key Health Metrics For 50+ Men

These Markers Can Predict Your Future

Reading Time: About 4 minutes

Hey Brothers,

Welcome back to the LenDentonThrive Letter. I write this newsletter to help busy 50+ Guys create lasting health and fitness transformations without crazy diets or grueling workouts. It’s the smarter, not harder way to lose weight, get fit, and stay fit for life.

You're focused on feeling better, shedding those extra pounds, and regaining your energy. That's smart. But true health isn't just about what the scale says. It's also about what's happening inside our bodies. Think of your body as a high-performance machine. To keep it running smoothly for decades to come, you need to check its key indicators regularly. One of the ways we do this is to get regular annual check-ups. I recently wrote about this here.

For us 50+ Guys, monitoring specific health metrics is crucial. These aren't just numbers; they are powerful insights into preventing serious issues like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and even dementia. Many of these conditions can develop silently, without obvious symptoms. And, knowing your numbers empowers you to take control.

Here are the key metrics every 50+ Guy should monitor regularly:

Blood Pressure: This is a cornerstone of heart health. Aim for below 120/80 mmHg. High blood pressure, often called a "silent killer," dramatically increases risks of heart attack and stroke.

Cholesterol Profile: A comprehensive look includes Total, LDL, and HDL cholesterol. Target Total cholesterol below 200 mg/dL, LDL (bad) below 100 mg/dL, and HDL (good) above 40 mg/dL. These numbers reveal your cardiovascular disease risk.

High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hs-CRP): This marker indicates inflammation in your body. Optimal levels are below 3.0 mg/L. Elevated hs-CRP signals increased cardiovascular risk, even if cholesterol looks fine.

Blood Glucose & HbA1c: These detect prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Fasting glucose should be below 100 mg/dL, and HbA1c levels under 5.7%. Early detection allows for critical lifestyle changes.

Waist Circumference: This is incredibly important for 50+ men. Your waist should be below 40 inches. Excess belly fat is a major contributor to diabetes, heart disease, and inflammatory conditions. It's often more predictive of health outcomes than BMI.

Vitamin D: Deficiency is common as we age. Optimal levels are between 20-50 ng/mL. Adequate Vitamin D supports bone health, immune function, and muscle strength.

Note: All of these factors are typically evaluated through the lab tests taken during an annual physical exam. This is one of the key reasons that annual exams are so important, and form the foundation of what I refer to as our Medical Early Warning System.

Sleep Efficiency: Good sleep is vital for overall health and fat loss. Aim for sleep efficiency above 85%. Poor sleep increases hunger hormones and can lead to weight gain. It also increases risks of cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline.

Smarter, Not Harder

Working with your healthcare provider to get these metrics checked regularly is a smart move. Most should be assessed annually. This proactive approach helps prevent disease and keeps you thriving.

What steps can you take today to gain clarity on your key health metrics and protect your future?
