Fixing America's Fat Problem

A Food-First Approach

Reading Time: 4 Minutes

Hey Brothers,

Welcome back to the LenDentonThrive Letter! If you’re a guy who consistently struggles with your weight, and you’d like to lose 20 or more pounds (and keep it off for good), then this week’s edition of the Letter is for you!

America Has A Problem

America has a health problem! Actually, America has a fat problem!

The numbers are staggering. Since 1960, obesity rates in the U.S. have tripled. Recent data shows that overall obesity stands at 40.3%. For men aged 40 to 59, that number jumps to 46.4%—the highest rate of any age group.

Severe obesity is also climbing. It rose from 7.7% in 2014 to 9.4% in 2023. Projections show that 47% of all U.S. adults will be obese by 2035.

But wait a minute? Aren’t we supposed to be living in a "Golden Age of Fitness" with gyms on every corner?  Yet we are heavier than ever. We are spending more money on gadgets, supplements, memberships, (and now injections), yet heart disease remains our leading killer.

So what’s up?

America Has a Food Problem

Maybe the reason we collectively keep getting heavier every year isn’t because we didn’t spend more time in the gym. Maybe the answer isn’t just to lift harder and exercise more.

Don’t get me wrong…I think exercise is important!  But, it’s not the solution to America’s Fat Problem.

The underlying cause of our Fat Problem is a Food Problem - specifically the Standard American Diet!

Our Standard American Diet, composed of fast foods, meals-in-a-box, sugary drinks and oversized restaurant portions are the real problem. The average American’s daily diet is trash!

The two biggest problems are hidden industrialized sweeteners (like high-fructose corn syrup) and ultra-processed foods (UPFs). Examples of UPFs include: pizza, frozen meals, breakfast cereals, soft drinks, sweetened coffee drinks, snacks and desserts.

The typical American gets more than 70% of their daily calories from UPF sources! These foods are high in calories and usually low in nutrition content. UPFs are the main source of America’s current obesity epidemic!

So, the problem isn’t your willpower. The problem is your food!

The Muscle Myth vs. The S.A.D. Reality

Most guys think the answer is "working out harder." They spend an extra hour in the gym so they can eat whatever they want. I call this the "Exercise Only" myth.

Here’s reality: you cannot outwork a bad diet.

So, the answer is - you need a better diet!

Note that I didn’t say you need to go on a diet! Our brains hate the deprivation caused by restrictive diets! And, the brain goes to work to short-circuit diets that reduce our calorie intake.

If you’ve ever experienced a slow-down in your metabolism when on a restrictive diet, this is why. It’s your brain working to restore your calorie intake. So, the best solution is to reduce weight without triggering your brain’s defense mechanisms!

Here’s the key takeaway - Your weightloss battle will be won in the kitchen, not the gym! With better choices, not heavier lifts!

The ThriveLife Solution

You don’t need grueling workouts or restrictive diets to fix this. You need a better operating system.

The ThriveLife is a food-first, gym-optional system designed for busy men. It’s built on a simple, but powerful concept - once you get your food right, everything else gets easier!

To get started with the ThriveLife, do these four simple tasks daily until they become habits:

1. Eat Smarter Stop dieting and start choosing better. Eating Smarter is about reducing calories by making better choices. Things like choosing lean meats over the packaged lasagna option. You can learn more about Eating Smarter here.

2. Move More You don’t need to run marathons. Focus on Zone 2 cardio, which is a brisk walking pace. Walking 7,000 steps a day reduces the risk of death for men over 50 by 50%. It’s also the best way to burn excess fat stores (like belly fat)!

3. Plan Daily Spend five minutes every morning planning your meals. It is easier to avoid a calorie than to burn one off.

4. Daily Weigh-Ins If you cannot measure it, you cannot manage it. A quick morning weigh-in provides the feedback your brain needs to stay on track.
