Don’t Be Normal

LenDentonThrive Letter #53

Hey Brothers!

Welcome to the LenDentonThrive Letter!

I’m on a mission to help guys over the age of 50 get lighter, stronger, and live longer. We do that by building healthy, sustainable lifestyles. I call it the ThriveLife! And, I write this newsletter to share strategies and tips to help you build your own, custom ThriveLife.

The New Normal

I recently came across a statistic, and it blew me away. According to the CDC, The average 50-year-old American man is 28 pounds heavier than his counterpart was in 1960. Wow, that’s quite an increase!

But, there’s a twist. That statistic is from 2004! [Note 1] We’ve put on an additional 8 pounds over the last 20 years! This means that the typical American Over-50 Guy is a whopping 36 pounds heavier than his grandfather was in 1960!

This is our New Normal!

But, how did we get here? Here are a few hints:

  • We have more sedentary lifestyles, including more desk jobs, meaning we move less.

  • We eat more fast food

  • We eat more highly processed and manufactured foods.

  • Our bigger portion sizes (2x compared to 1960) mean big increases in the calories we consume daily.

The result of these changes has been an explosion of obesity and a rise in obesity-related diseases like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and even some forms of dementia.

Maybe this New Normal is Your Normal! Meaning, maybe this describes where you are right now.

If that describes you, I get it. I know where you are. Because, I used to be there, too.

This used to be My Normal. Ten years ago I was 70 pounds overweight, with high cholesterol and an ugly family history of fatal heart attacks!

But, I changed directions. I lost the weight. I’m healthier today at 66 than I was at 56! And I’m convinced that almost any Over-50 Guy can accomplish the same change I did!

Your Three Options

So, what are you going to do? As I see it, you basically have three options:

Option 1 - Do Nothing! Stay the course; don’t make any changes; take your chances. This is the path that most of our friends are on. On this path, you’re likely to find degenerating health, chronic disease, lots of medical intervention and ultimately, a shorter life.

Option 2 - Try Again! You’ve chosen to change your situation. That’s good news! You know what you need to do. Perhaps you failed to reach your goals using this approach in the past. But, this time will be different. You’ll try harder, stick with the plan longer, tough out the those workouts and stay on the diet. On this path, there’s a good chance that you’ll succeed. But, human nature being what it is, there’s a better chance that you’ll come up short again using this approach.

Option 3 - Try Something New! This time will be different because you’ve taken a different path, a new approach that doesn’t have the same shortcomings of your previous attempts. On this path, you might still fail. But, if you choose wisely, you’ll pick a plan that doesn’t rely on difficult diets or grueling workouts. You’ll find a plan that requires less willpower to reach your goals. If you choose wisely, you’re going to succeed.  Then, you’ll find your health improving as you age. You’ll look better. You’ll feel better. Your energy will increase. Your friends are going to wonder what you’re up to. And ultimately, your better health will lead to a longer, happier life.

Don’t Be Normal

Being normal is a choice that we make every day. With our daily actions, we vote on whether we’ll walk on a healthy path or a less-than-healthy path. So, choose wisely.

Don’t be normal!
