Are You Thriving Yet? (Part 2)

American men are experiencing a health crisis!
We’re more obese across every age group than ever before. And, obesity-related diseases like heart disease, stroke, cancer and dementia are at all-time highs.
Are you living in this Danger Zone?

Maybe you’ve been lied to!
In my last issue of the LDT Letter, I shared 3 Big Lies that we’ve all fallen for that are the real reasons why American men are so overweight and unhealthy. You can read about it here.
This newsletter is all about thriving, so let’s focus on what we can do to counter the negative effects these 3 Big Lies have had on our lives, and how to move in a new direction with better outcomes!
Corporate Food
Let’s begin with Big Lie #1, that corporate food is good for you. The food that most Americans eat today comes packaged in shrink-wrap or boxes with brands on it. In fact, Americans get more than 70% of their calories these days from highly-processed, corporate foods. These foods are typically engineered by food scientists and manufactured in industrial factories.
I think of them as food-products, not food!
They are designed to be tasty, but also addictive. Plus, they're filled with added sugars, carbohydrates and seed oils to make them taste good. And, if you’re more than 20 pounds overweight, there’s a good chance that corporate food is the cause.
Do This Instead: Here are two quick facts to consider when it comes to food:
Food is either fuel or poison!
Your weight loss battle will be won in the kitchen!
The right food choices are the key to healthy, sustainable weight loss. Corporate food is designed to build return customers and healthy profits. It’s not designed to help you maintain a healthy body weight.
Making healthier food choices will enable you to lose weight and keep it off permanently. It’s not about dieting (short-term, unsustainable, restrictive eating). It’s about your DIET (your consistent daily nutrition).
I lost 70 pounds in 7 months without dieting. Instead, I replaced the unhealthy corporate foods in my life with whole foods. I replaced factory foods with farm foods. I didn’t starve myself. The results were amazing. I still do this today. I call it Eating Smart, and you can learn more about it here.
Sick-care vs. Healthcare
Big Lie #2 is: Healthcare is about health. In reality, our medical professionals spend considerably more time focusing on fixing our sicknesses than promoting general health and preventing illness!
This is not intended to be a knock on doctors. They are knowledgable, caring people. But, healthcare is big business in America. And most doctors work for healthcare corporations. It’s more profitable to focus on healing sickness than preventing it.
Do This Instead: Own your health and fitness!
Here are two things I highly recommend to every Guy, regardless of his age:
Be the boss when it comes to your general health and fitness. Take ownership! Nobody cares about your personal health and fitness as much as you do! Your health is your first wealth, so treat it that way. You take the lead, and use your doctor as your paid health consultant.
Get your annual check-ups! This is super-important because early detection is always the best medicine for treating illness. Your doctor has an arsenal of powerful diagnostic tools, and your annual checkup is the time and place to put those to use. Every Guy should have his own Medical Early Warning System (MEWS). Your annual check-up is the foundation of your own personal MEWS!
Gym-First Fitness
Big Lie #3 is: Muscles = Fitness!. This is basically a gym-first approach to fitness. And, it’s not surprising that “gym-companies” and “gym-coaches” push this strategy so hard.
I want to be clear about muscle-building and strength training. Muscles are a good thing! Everyone benefits from having more muscle mass.
But, muscle building is not the be-all and end-all of becoming fit!
Much of the advice coming from the gym-culture is wrong and not helpful. And, as a result, far too many Guys fail at their attempt to get fit and healthy following the gym-first approach.
They’re not thriving!
Do This Instead: It’s nearly impossible to outwork a bad diet, so start your journey to fitness in the kitchen, not the gym. Here are three areas to focus on for now:
Start Eating Smarter (see above)
Start moving more (get more steps daily. Set a target of 7,000-10,000 steps daily)
Get more sleep (Yes, sleep affects weight loss. You need 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night).
Smarter Not Harder
The reason that most American Guys are overweight is that they’ve been living a life based on the 3 Big Lies. I built the ThriveLife approach as a direct counterpunch to these lies.
