A Gym-Optional Reset
Building Your Long-Term Alternative Fitness Strategy

Welcome back to the LenDentonThrive Letter. This is where I write every week about the ThriveLife - my food-first, gym-optional approach to help you lose weight, get fit and stay fit for life!
I’m writing this edition in mid-April, so we’re already three months into 2026. And, by this point, around 50% of new gym memberships started as New Year’s resolutions in January 2026 are going dark!
This is typical. Every year, about half of the new gym members who signed up in January are no longer attending regularly. Another 18% joined, but never showed up at all! That means that nearly 70% of all new members are done by summer.
There are generally three reasons guys quit the gym:
Time Conflicts - their schedules just don’t support spending the necessary time in the gym on an ongoing basis.
Lack of Results / Burn-out - their results are not matching their expectations, or they’re unable to maintain the rigor and consistency needed to develop the gains they expected.
Injury - the gym experience is often cut short by injuries caused by poor form or over-exertion. Injuries often take weeks or months to heal, impacting attendance.
Maybe this is you! Maybe you’ve had to re-evaluate how much time you can devote to the gym.
Whatever your reason, it’s your call. And, I’m not here to judge (like some of the fitness influencers I’m seeing on the socials lately!).
But, here’s an important thing to remember - ending your relationship with the gym doesn’t have to mean that you’re walking away from your fitness journey!
Not by a long shot!
Because the gym is not the only way to become fit. And, if you need to lose 30 or more pounds, it’s not even the best way to get fit!
I speak from personal experience. A few years ago, I was 70 pounds overweight with high cholesterol that my doctor said made me a poster child for a heart attack or stroke. I also had a painful leg injury that kept me from running or lifting weights.
If I had relied strictly on the usual gym-first approach, my options would have been pretty limited. But, I needed to make some big changes fast!
So, I took a different approach. I decided to focus on fat/weight loss first instead of building muscle mass. And, the results were pretty astounding - I lost 70 pounds in under 7 months!
I achieved these results without starving myself or doing any crazy diets. There were no gruelling workouts. There were no protein shakes, cleanse smoothies, or lifetime injections!
Instead, I did three simple things every day! These three simple things changed my body composition and helped me become healthier than I’d been in 20 years. I was 55 years-old at the time. And, it’s still working for me today, 13 years later!
Just Three Things
Here are the three things I did daily to change the course of my fitness journey 13 years ago that are still working for me today:
1 - Upgrade Your Daily Diet (aka Nutrition) - When we get our food right, everything else gets easier. That especially goes for weight loss. That’s because you can’t outwork a bad diet.
I started by eliminating these 6 food ingredients from my daily diet:
Sugar
White flour
White rice
White potatoes
Corn
High Fructose Corn Syrup (a widely-used industrial sweetener)
When I did this, the pounds started coming off quickly. Most American guys have no idea how many excess calories they consume every day. And most of the foods we eat are crammed full of these unnecessary calories that are bloating our waistlines and destroying our health. I call this Eating Smarter, and you can learn more about it here.
2 - Start Walking - You probably don’t know that walking is the ultimate cheat code for weight loss! I didn’t know it when I began, but it was the only exercise available to me because of my leg injury. So, I walked as much as I could. I started just walking around 2,000 steps a day (measured on my Fitbit watch). But over time, I got to 10,000 steps a day.
I later learned that walking in Cardio Zone 2 (that’s typically 60-70% of your max heart rate) is the scientifically-proven best way to burn excess body fat! That’s because in Zone 2, our bodies metabolize stored fat for energy. Above the 70% heart rate, our bodies need more energy than fat alone can provide, so the body starts metabolizing muscle for energy!
And for most guys, Zone 2 happens with a brisk walk. No jogging required! Zone 2 cardio is the secret formula for quick fat loss! Read more about it here.
3 - Weigh Every Day - I call this my Jedi Mind Trick for permanent weight loss. Measuring and tracking your weight every day has powerful psychological impacts on your actions. What gets measured gets managed.
But measuring is only half of the solution. The other half is visually tracking your weight loss journey. I did this in my Fitbit app. You can do it in almost any fitness app using your phone. The key is to use the app to graph the weight.
When you measure and visually track your weight daily, it tells your brain that this is important to you. And subconsciously, your brain goes to work to bend that weight graph line in the right direction. You’ll start making daily decisions that move that graph in the right direction. It’s not magic, it’s neuroscience!
These three simple steps changed my life by helping me to get fit and stay fit! It worked then. It still works now. It will work for you, too!
Give it a try today!
